Q

What are the subverted gender roles in Macbeth, consider Lady Macbeth and Macbeth and give quotations to support this

A

Lady Macbeth is more manly as she would be able to “leave the rest to me” and wish to “unsex herself” and Macbeth sees this as he says “ bring forth men-children only “ implying that she is so manly she should produce only men.
Whereas Macbeth is, as called by Lady Macbeth “too full the milk of human kindness” , meaning that LM thinks M is weak and ‘women like’.
These are subverted gender roles as they are the opposites of what traits the general gender roles were thought to be in Elizabethan times.
