macbeth good vs evil Flashcards
what is the theme in good vs evil
the good will always win
‘I have no words:
My voice is in my sword’
Macduff’s lack of faith in his own words is in stark contrast to those of Macbeth.
- Throughout the play, all of Macbeth’s external influences have been rooted in words and prophecies.
- Macduff highlights Macbeth’s flaws once again as he is the antagonist of the play.
- Macduff’s power and confidence is based on his physical strength like any soldier at that time.
- Macbeth, however, believes in what other people say to him, and values this more highly than his won strength.
- this shows that Macduff can make his own decisions but M can’t so Macduff is more trustworthy and more fit to be a king.
‘Turn, hell-hound, turn.’
(said by Macduff)
- The noun ‘hell’ has connotations of evil and damnation.
- On the one hand, it suggests that Macduff believes Macbeth is so evil, he is like a demon from hell.
- Staring into the eyes of a ‘hell-hound’ is an omen of death, so Macduff is also highlighting Macbeth’s power and deadly skills as a warrior.
- Moreover, Macduff’s use of the noun ‘hound’ implies that Macduff is dehumanising Macbeth, and believes him to be more best than human, such is his violent and uncontrollable temper that no one can look upon him and see a man.
- The repetition of the verb ‘turn’ suggests that he is confused and disturbed.
- Furthermore, the use of the imperative suggests that Macduff is ordering Macbeth back to hell as though he ascended from this place of darkness and evil.
The usurper’s cursed head. The time is free.
This quote is said after Macduff has killed Macbeth towards the very end of the play. He is talking about how he kills Macbeth in the end, by chopping off his head and defeating the evil in Scotland. This is important because it shows that good characters will be victorious over their opposites, those filled with evil.
at no time broke my faith, would not betray the devil to his fellow
- Macduff has never betrayed anybody in his life
- on the other hand, M has betrayed many people before.
- it shows that Macduff is very loyal to his country unlike macbeth
