The play calls into question the virtues and natures of rulers, exploring the fine line between authority and tyranny, as well as what the qualities of an effective ruler are. These would have been relevent concerns particuarly in the light of uncertainty surrounding the new King, James I
What is Regicide
The murder of a monarch is known as regicide. During the period, it was believed that Kings and Queens were given their right to rule by God. As a result, an attack on a King was viewed as an attack on the will of God.
How does Shakespeare explore gender
In the play, Shakespeare seems to explore how fixed these images of gender are. Macbeth certainly displays qualities that, normatively, could have been considerd more ‘feminine’; while Lady Macbeth seems (at least in earlier stages) to display and proactivity that would have been associated with masculinity
