When is deadly force justified
Deadly force is justified only under conditions of extreme necessity, and when lesser means have been exhausted, and unavailable, or cannot be reasonably employed.
Deadly force conditions
- Inherent right of self-defense
- Defense of others
- Assets Vital to National Security
- Inherently dangerous property
- National critical infrastructure
- Serious offenses against persons
- Escape
- Arrest of apprehension
Deadly Force Triangle
For the use of deadly force to be appropriate three conditions must exist:
- Capability
- Opportunity
- Intent
Use of Force Continuum.
Levels of force to be used with a passive subject
Level 1: Presence
Level 2: Verbal Commands
Level 3: Soft Controls (Restraining and Detaining) I.e. Handcuffs, flexi-cuffs…
