M6 L1 Flashcards
1
Q
How does the chemical structure differ between RNA and DNA?
A
- RNA = 2 OH (2nd carbon contains oxygen)
- DNA = 2 carbon is H only, lacks oxygen
2
Q
What is the difference in the CHEMICAL structure in-between Uracil and THYMINE?
A
- In Uracil (carbon 5 ) is attached to H
- IN thymine carbon 5 is attached to CH3 methyl group
3
Q
What amount of RNA does a single cell contain?
A
10 pg(picogram = 10 to the power of -11 g)
4
Q
Of the total RNA present in a cell, what is the percentage composition of each type of RNA?
A
80 to 85% = RIbosomal RNA
10 to 15 % = sRNA,tRNA low moluclar weight RNA
1-5%= mRNA
5
Q
What are the two type of RNA with a thick band in the molecular weight?
A
28s , 18s
6
Q
How is the secondary sequence of an RNA formed, include any relevant NAME of the type of the sequence?
A
- The secondary sequence is achieved by PALINDROMIC sequences within RNA , which complementarily pair with each giving RNA a stem-loop structure
- coding DNA, contains palindromic sequence which goes like = 5’ —-ACG——–CGT——3’
- This is transcribed into RNA as= 5’—-ACG——CGU—3’
- ACG and CGU complementarily base pair with each other and from loop giving the secondary sequence its structure
7
Q
In which 3 ways is RNA regulated?
A
- Synthesis - transcription synthesis can be tuned off or on (lac operon)
- Regulated DEGRADATION - transferrin receptor mRNA
- Translation efficiency - protein can control the usage of certain RNA
8
Q
What are the 2 properties of the UTR region?
A
- Regulated DEgration
- Translation efficiency
