List the process of a statute?
Bill prepared, Introduction, First Reading, Select Committee, Second Reading, Committee of the Whole House, Third Reading and Royal Assent.
What’s the Introduction?
The bill is introduced and MPs have time to read and consider it.
What is the public’s influence of the Bill’s introduction?
The public may lobby MPs to create or change laws
What is the Publics influence of the select committee?
The public may make submissions on the bill.
Where may the public lobby the MPs to accept or reject the bill?
The Second Reading, Committee of the Whole House, and Third Reading
What’s the public influence on The Second Reading, Committee of the Whole House, and the Third Reading?
The public may lobby MP’s to accept or reject the bill.
What is the First Reading?
MP’s debate and vote on the bill. If the vote is lost, the bill goes no further. If successful, it is sent to a select committee.
Whats the Select Committee Process?
The select committee usually has 6 months to gather information and prepare a report on the bill for the House. The report includes recommendations on any changes that may be needed.
What’s the Second Reading?
The house debates the select committee report and votes on the bill. If the vote is lost, the bill goes no further. If successful, the bill is ready for the committee of the whole House.
What’s the committee of the whole house step?
MP’s consider the bill in detail and vote on the proposed changes. The committee reports to the House.
What’s the third reading?
Final debate and vote. If the vote is lost the bill goes no further. If successful, the bill has been passed.
What’s royal assent?
Bill signed by Governor-General and becomes an Act.
