M3: Fractures with Images Flashcards
This version contains images of fractures to be identified. Additional notes were added from some of the lecture and is not 100% comprehensive, nor are they expected to be remembered.
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Pott’s Fracture or Pott Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- named from stepping in a pothole or a similar mechanism where ankle rolls and snaps fibula and tibia
- is specific to the lower leg; fibula and tibia
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Greenstick Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- Specific to youth. Kids bones are pliable, instead of fracturing through it bends and cracks
- Notice angulation deformity
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Comminuted Fracture
Video Lecture Notes:
- multiple fragments
- Non-specific to region; but femur is notable
- Have to be careful, there is risk of arteries being involved with comminuted fractures of the femur
- Typically caused by very violent event; e.g. multi-story drop, ATV accidents
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Colles Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- Specific to distal end of arm; the wrist
- Specifically the distal end of the radius (sometimes with ulna too)
- Notice the level of displacement is more noticeable in different view angles in this image
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Epiphyseal Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- a growth plate fracture
- specific to youth
- can cause issues with fusing of growth plates
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Linear Fracture
Additional Notes:
- extends along the length of the bone
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Spiral Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- Needs rotation force/torsion kind of event
- Mainly seen in youth
- High probability of child abuse if there isn’t a very specific mechanism like in sports
- Not specific to region, but tend to see them most in long bones like radius, ulna, tibia, fibia
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Transverse Fracture
Notes from Lecture Video:
- fractured transversely across the bone
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Avulsion Fracture
Additional Notes:
- the bone is pulled away
What type of fracture is this?
Answer: Compression Fracture
Additional Notes:
- specific to to spine/spinal column, specifically the vertebrae
- a type of vertebral fracture
A growth plate fracture is called a(n) _______ _______
epiphyseal fracture
What type of fracture needs rotation force/torsion event and raises concern for child abuse if there isn’t a very specific known mechanism causing it?
spiral fracture
What type of fracture involves breaking into multiple fragments?
comminuted fracture
