M1 Drugs Flashcards
Epinephrine
a and B adrenergic receptor agonist
Causes increase in HR, bronchiole smooth m relaxation, and slight peripheral vasodilation
Clenbuterol (Ventipulmin)
Respiratory drug B2 agonist approved for RAO in horses Banned for use in food animals adverse effects = tachycardia, muscle tremors and uterine relaxation
Compounded clenbuterol
Respiratory drug
don’t use this bc doesn’t often contain the amount of drug it says it does
Salbutamol/albuterol
Ventolin
Respiratory drug Used in cats and horses
Metered dose inhalant for acute bronchoconstriction events
don’t use chronically = B-receptor down regulation
Ways to use inhalant formulations in vet med
Nebulizers and masks/spacing chambers Aerokat Aeromask Nebulair Breathe Easy
Theophylline
Respiratory drug
Methylxanthine
Not used often bc of adverse cardiac and CNS effects
PDE inhibitor = relaxation of bronchial smooth m
Human formulations available
Atropine (for respiratory distress)
Anticholinergic
Inhibits vagally-mediated bronchial smooth m tone due to stimulation of cholinergic receptors
Can use it as a test for RAO in horses
Prednisone and Prednisolone
GC for inflammatory treatment of respiratory disease
Depo Medrol (Methylprednisolone acetate)
GC that can be given to cats but need to watch for diabetes
Dexamethasone
GC powder or injection for horses
Fluticasone
Inhalant GC
most potent and longest acting and less adverse effects
Only available in metered doses
Cyproheptadine
For serotonin-induced respiratory inflammation in cats
Not proven to be effective
Butorphanol (Torbutrol)
antitussive for dogs
Anaphylaxis
Occurs with severe, systemic activation of H1 receptors –> hypotension and bronchoconstriction
H1 blockers
Stabilize H1 receptors into non-active state
Limited oral bioavailability, lipid soluble and high volume of distribution
Pyrilamine
Antihist, Pyrihist
1st generation H1 antihistamine
Ethylene diamine family
General anti-histamine and anti-allergenic effect
Injectable and oral formulations
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
1st Generation H1 AH
Ethanolamines
no vet-approved formulations in Canada but ok to use in animals as most ppl have in cupboard
Dimenhydrinate
Gravol
1st Generation Ethanolamine
Not vet-approved in Canada but most ppl have it
Metyrosine
Inhibits synthesis of adrenergic nt
Botulinum toxin
inhibits release of cholinergic nt
Bretylium
Inhibits release adrenergic nt
Amphetamine
Increase release of nt
Black widow spider venom
Increase release of cholinergic nt
Cocaine
Inhibits reuptake of adrenergic nt
Cholinesterase inhibitors/Neostigmine
Inhibits metabolism of cholinergic nt
