M1 Additional Flashcards
Taken from canvas modules.
Particles composing Matter
Atom, Molecule, Ions
The smallest particles
Atoms
They are composed of atoms
Molecules
These are particles with charges
Ions
Type of heterogenous mixture that consists of coarse particles which are visible to the naked eye
Suspension
Type of heterogenous mixture that consists of a dispersed phase or the substance that is scattered and a dispersing medium in which the dispersed phase is spread.
Colloid
The scattering of light by particles in a colloid or suspension
Tyndall Effect
Types of Colloids
Aerosol
Sol
Solid Sol
Emulsion
Gel
Foam
A colloidal system of particles dispersed in gas
Aerosol
Formed when solid particles are dispersed in a liquid phase
Sol
Formed when solid particles are dispersed into another solid
Solid Sol
A colloid made up of two liquids that are immiscible and small particles suspended in it
Emulsion
A colloid of a liquid in a solid
Gel
Gas dispersed in a liquid or a
solid
Foam
A process of separating solid particles from a liquid medium or two liquids that are immiscible with each other by means of gravity
Decantation
A process of separating solid particles from a liquid medium by using an equipment called centrifuge.
Centrifugation
A process of extricating mixtures that contain two
substances with different melting points. This is usually used when separating alloy components.
Melting
A process of separating a a volatile solid from a non-
volatile solid.
An example of this is when a mixture of sand and Iodine is to be separated. Iodine is a solid that sublimes.
