Who came up with the multi-store model of memory?
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin (1968).
What is the sensory register?
The place where information is held at each of the senses, and the corresponding areas of the brain.
What is the capacity of the sensory registers?
Large.
What is the duration of things in the sensory registers?
Milliseconds.
How is information transferred from SM to STM according to the MSM?
By attention focussed on one of the sensory registers.
According to the MSM how does information stay in STM?
Maintenance rehearsal.
According to the MSM how does information get taken out of STM?
Retrieval.
According to the MSM how does information get transferred from STM to LTM?
Maintenance rehearsal.
How does information get transferred from LTM back to STM according to the MSM?
Retrieval.
What is retrieval?
The process of getting information from LTM back to STM.
What is maintenance rehearsal?
Rehearing information so it remains in STM/gets transferred to LTM.
What is the MSM of memory?
An explanation of memory based on 3 separate memory stores, and how information is transferred between these stores.
What is a sensory register?
This is the information at the senses. Information is retained for a very brief period by the sensory registers. We are only able to hold accurate images of sensory information momentarily (less than half a second). the capacity of sensory memory is very large, such as all the cells on the retina on the eye. The method of coding depends on the sense organ involved - visual for the eyes, acoustic for the ears, etc.
