M - Statistics & Mechanics 1 - 1) Data collection Flashcards
Definition of a population
The whole set of items that are of interest
Benefits and drawbacks of censuses
Benefits:
- Should give a completely accurate result
Drawbacks:
- Time consuming and expensive
- Cannot be used when the testing process destroys the item
Definition of a sample
A subset of the population which is used to find out information about the population as a whole
Benefits and drawbacks of samples
Benefits:
- Less time consuming and expensive than censuses
Drawbacks:
- Data may not be as accurate or generalisable
All types of sampling
Random:
- Simple random
- Systematic
- Stratified
Non-random:
- Quota
- Opportunity
Definition of simple random sampling
Where every sample has an equal chance of being selected
Definition of systematic sampling
The sample is chosen at regular intervals from an ordered list
Definition of stratified sampling
The population is divided into different strata and a random sample is taken from each
Formula for stratified sampling
Number sampled in stratum = (number in stratum ÷ number in population) × overall sample size
Definition of quota sampling
Selecting a sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole population
Definition of opportunity sampling
Taking the sample from people who are available at the time and who fit the criteria being looked for
