Lyphatic And Immune System Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and organs that helps remove waste and toxins the body.
What does the lymphatic system consist of
spleen
Lymph nodes
Lymphatic vessels
What is the spleen
The spleen helps remove old or damaged red blood cells, stores healthy blood cells, and helps fight off infections.
What is the lymph node
Lymph nodes are glands that are all over your body. They help catch and removd bacteria.
What are lymphatic vessels
Lymphatic vessels are like little tubes that carry a fluid called lymph around your body. They help your body get rid of waste and fight off germs.
(They’re kind of like the roads that help the immune cells travel to where they need to go. )
What is phagocytosis
Its an ability which allows some cells to engulf and eat bacteria or dead cells.
Name 3 actions of anti bodies
Agglutination
Anti toxin
Opsonisation
What is agglutination
Agglutination is when particles, like bacteria or red blood cells, clump together. It happens when certain substances, called antibodies, bind to the surface of these particles. This clumping allows the immune system to get rid of it better
What is anti toxin
The antibodies that target specifc toxins are called antitoxins. They target specifc toxins to elimate them
What is opsonisation
Opsonization is a a process opsonins, surrounds bacteria or viruses. These opsonins act as signals for immune signals to recognize and engulf the pathogens more efficiently.
Name 2 disorders of the immune/lymphatic system
myeloid leukaemia
Lymphoblastic leukaemia
What is myeloid leukaemia (acute and chronic)
Myeloid leukemia disrupts the normal creating of blood cells by causing abnormal growth and division of immature cells in the bone marrow. These leukemia cells, crowd out the healthy blood cells, leading to a decrease in the production of healthy cells
Acute is a very rapid progression of illness
Chronic is a slower pase progression of the illness
Name 2 symptoms of myeloid leukaemia
Easy brusing
Fatigue
What is lymphoblastic leukemia(acute and chronic) and 2 symptoms of it
Lymphoblastic leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells called lymphocytes. It causes an overproduction of immature white blood cells which=less making of normal white blood cells
- Fatigue and weakness:
- Frequent infections
Acute is a very rapid progression of illness
Chronic is a slower pase progression of the illness
