What are some general symptoms of lymphoma?
Lymphadenopathy
Drenching night sweats
Weight loss
Itch without rash, fatigue
How would a viral lymphadenopathy present?
Tender, hard, smooth lump with no skin inflammation that is not tethered
How would a bacterial lymphadenopathy present?
Tender, hard, smooth lump that has skin inflammation
May be tethered
How would a lymphoma present?
Non tender, soft, smooth lump that has no inflammation and is not tethered
How would a metastatic carcinoma present?
Non tender, hard, irregular lump that has no inflammation and is tethered
What is done by a surgeon when lymphoma is suspected?
Fine needle aspirate
or
Core biopsy
How is lymph node pathology assessed?
Histology-microscopic appearances
Immunohistochemistry
What colours in immunohistochemistry are positive / negative?
Brown - positive
Blue - negative
Which types of cytogenetic analysis can be used in the investigation of lymphoma?
G banding - grow cells in culture to look at spread of chromosomes
FISH - probes emit a specific light colour to look for chromosomal abnormality
What type of lymphoma is more rare and more aggressive?
T cell lymphoma
What are the two main subsets of lymphoma?
Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s

T-cell and B-cell lymphoma
