Lymphoid Leukemia Flashcards
what is acute leukemia
excess of immature WBC in the blood
Proliferation of BM PRECURSOR cells that accumulate in the marrow or blood
cells fail to differentiate and undergo normal apoptosis
what cells are decreased in acute leukemai
normal peripheral blood cells responisble for control of infection, hemostasis and oxygen delviery :
neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelets, RBC
So leukemic cells proliferate more rapidly than noraml cells
No
Is there anything unique about the cell cycle time of leukemic cells
they are unaltered compared to normal BM cells
where do leukemic cells eventually die?
they fail to differentiate and essentially die accumulating in the BM and PB
What is ALL
acute lymphoblastic leukemia
- a malignant disease of lymphoid percursor cells
What are the risk factors for ALL
Down’s and Bloom’s
Radiation
what is the cytogenetics of ALL
increase t(9,22), t(8,14)
what is the immunophenotype of ALL
incr expresson of myeloid antigens
decr incidence of pre-B type
What is teh drug metabolism of ALL
decr fomration of MTX polyglutamates
incr MDR-1 expression
What are some adverse prognosis characteristics of ALL
incr in WBC at diagnosis
slow response to therapy
incr freq mediastinal mass
and these are the reasons why adults have bad prognosis
which transplant is helpful in ALL
Allo BMT
