Lymphocytes and Cell Mediated Response Flashcards
What are lymphocytes part of?
The specific response to antigens
What are the two types of lymphocytes?
B lymphocytes (B cells) and T lymphocytes (T cells)
What are B cells and T cells created by?
Bone marrow stem cells
Where do B cells mature?
Bone marrow
Where do T cells mature?
Thymus
What is the cell mediated response?
Response of T cells to a foreign antigen
What occurs in the cell mediated response?
Receptors on T Cells bind to antigens on antigen presenting cells and cause T cell to divide rapidly by mitosis (clinal expansion). These cloned T cells can differentiate into different specialised T cells
What do memory T cells do?
Enable a rapid response to reinfection of the same pathogen
What do cytotoxic T cells do?
Kill abnormal cells and infected body cells. Release a protein called perforin which creates pores in the cell membrane allowing all substances to move into the cell causing cell death.
What do helper T cells do?
Stimulate B cells to divide and secrete antibodies
Can T cells stimulate phagocytosis of pathogens?
Yes
