Lymphatics Flashcards
How does the Thoracic Diaphragm function in terms of lymphatic flow?
Inhalation (contraction of diaphragm) causes creation of negative pressure in thorax; pulls lymph fluid centrally and acts on Cisterna Chylii to push lymph fluid superiorly.
How does the Pelvic Diaphragm function in terms of lymphatic flow?
It works in concert with the Thoracic Diaphragm and pumps lymph fluid from the lower extremities and pelvis.
What conditions may cause the Pelvic Diaphragm to be dysfunctional?
DED-PB
Dysmenorrhea, Endometriosis, Deliver, Post Labor, and BPH
Edema is the cause of a poorly functioning lymphatic system. What are four major causes of edema?
1) Increased Arterial Pressure: HTN
2) Increased Venous Pressure: CHF, etc..
3) Decreased Plasma Osmotic Colloids; Cirrhosis and/or Kwashiorkors
4) High interstitial pressure; leads to lymphatic collapse, worsening edema
Lymphedema can lead to chronic states characterized and cause by what?
Fibroblast recruitment; Firbosis/Contractures
What are the indications for Lymphatic OMM?
MUA- CLAP Mild CHF URI and LRI Asthma COPD Ligamentous Strain/Sprain Acute Somatic Dysfunction Pregnancy
What are absolute contraindications for lymph treatment?
Necrotizing fascitis and Anuria
What are the relative contraindications for Lymph treatment?
AF-SAN-BCCU Acute, Indurated Lymph Node (do not treat directly) Fracture Splenomegaly; with mono Acute Hepatitis Newly diagnosed Malignancy Bacterial infection with recurrent risk Chronic infections Coagulopathies Unstable cardiac conditions
With Lymphatic treatment, were is all treatment began and ended?
Thoracic Inlet
What is the level of treatment (including lymphatic zones) for lymphatic treatment?
Zone One: Begining with Thoracic Inlet Zone Two: Abdomen Zone Three: Arms Zone Four: Legs Zone Five: Neck/Head THoracic INlet
