Lymphatic System - Lymph Nodes Flashcards
A lymph node located in the neck.
Cervical lymph node
A subtype of cervical lymph nodes that are closest to the front of the neck and swell with a cold or strep throat.
Anterior cervical lymph node
A subtype of cervical lymph nodes that are found behind the band of muscles on the sides of the neck and swell with infectious mononucleosis.
Posterior cervical lymph node
A subtype of cervical lymph nodes located at the back of the neck at the base of the skull and swell with HIV.
Occipital cervical lymph node
A lymph node found in the armpit (axilla). There are about 10-40 nodes in each axilla, and these nodes are important to the diagnosis of breast cancer.
Axillary lymph node
A lymph node located just above the collarbone (clavicle). The swelling of these nodes is characteristic of lung cancer or lymphoma.
Supraclavicular lymph node
A lymph node present in the center of the chest cavity between the lungs. Checking these nodes is important to the staging of lung cancer and some lymphomas.
Mediastinal lymph node
A lymph node located in the groin and filter the lymph from the groin and below. These nodes swell due to injuries, STDs, skin infections, yeast infections, and cancer.
Inguinal lymph node
A lymph node found at the back of the abdomen behind tissues that cover the abdominal wall. These nodes are where testicular cancer first spreads.
Retroperitoneal lymph node
A lymph node located in the membranes that surround the intestines. They swell due to gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and lymphoma.
Mesenteric lymph node
A lymph node in the lower abdomen area that holds the hip bones, bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs. When these nodes swell, it is characteristic of bladder, prostate, cervical, ovarian, or anal cancer.
Pelvic lymph node
