Lymphatic System Flashcards
Functions
- Transports excess interstitial fluid back to blood
- Route for absorbed fats, and some vitamins from intestine to blood
- Provides immunological defences
Lymphatic Capillaries
Closed tube
Has 1 way valves
Drains
Lacteals
Transport fat away from GI tracts
Lymph
Combination of ISF, solutes, sometimes foreign materials the liquid is called lymph. Resembles plasma (but less protein) Lymph vessels reabsorb this excess fluid and return to venous circulation - if not = EDEMA (swelling) (excess also causes blood volume to drop, and this lymphatic system prevents the ISF levels from going crazy
Thoracic Ducts (lymphatic drainage)
Drains lymph from lower extremities, left thoracic region, left upper, left side of face and neck –> left subclavian vein
Right Lymphatic duct
Empties the right side of face, right arm, and right thoracic region into the right subclavian vein
Cisterna Chyli
Collects lymph from lower extremities and intestines region –> into thoracic duct
Lymph Nodes
in clusters or in chains, along larger lymphatic vessels
Anatomy of a Lymph Node
phagocytic cell - Reticular tissue that filters and the other cells attack the bacteria
Trabecular - divides the reticular tissue
the spleen
not needed in adults, but important for kids and people who are immunocompromised
Reb Bulb
destroys old blood cells
White Bulb
Germinal centers for the production of lymphocytes
