Lymphatic System Flashcards
AP
The basic function of the lymphatic system?
To curry fluid and foreign particles from body tissue and cells.
Transport fats from the digestive tract to the blood: Chyle.
Produce lymphocytes to deal with waste and toxins.
Develop antibodies to defend the body against infections.
General structure of the lymphatic system?
Lymphatic capillaries Lymphatic vessels Lymphatic nodes Lymphatic ducts Lymphatic tissue including Tnsil/spleen/appendix/Peyer's patches
Structure and function of lymph capillaries and lymph vessels?
Lymph capillaries- thin walled, permeable, collect tissue fluid, return some interstitial fluid to veins, curry lymphatic to vessels.
Lymph vessels- contains volves to prevent backflow, transport lymph through lymphatic nodes.
characteristics of lymph nodes a d lymph nodules ?
Vary in side from a pin head to an almond, found all over the body, nodes generally found at sites where infection can pass from one part of the body to another.
Structure of the lymphatic nodes?
Are a mass of lymphoid tissue, surround by connective tissue capsule, fed by lymphatic vessel, efferent and afferent vessels.
Nodes I the body?
Cervical nodes Axillary nodes Intestinal nodes Iliac nodes Inguinal nodes Supratrochlea nodes Popliteal nodes
function of lymphatic nodes?
Lymph drainage, produce antibodies, detoxis lymph to fight infection.
location and function of Spleen (lymphatic organ)
The largest lymphatic tissue mass in body, located in abdomen behind and left of the stomach. Produce lymphocytes and assists in fighting infection, also produce phagocytes to destroy worn out erythrocytes (red blood cell) and abnormal cells. Selectively filter white cells and platelets.
location and function of Thymus (lymphatic organ)
Processes lymphocytes into active “T” cells vital to immune system. Located behind sternum (breast bone). Endocrine function, pre puberty in the control of growth.
Location and function of Lymphatic duct (lymphatic organ)
Thoracic duct, right lymphatic duct, cistern a chyli. Function general: grain lymph and return it to the blood stream.
Contra-indication associated with diseases/disorder or linked to the lymphatic system?
Cancer HIV-AID Lymphoedema Mastitis Oedema
