Lymphatic System Flashcards
Fluid not taken up by lymphatic system
Edema
Blind tube with overlapping endothelial cells
Lymphatic vessels
Prevent backflow
Internal valves
Major contributor to lymph flow
Pulse of proximal arteries
The fluid dumped back into the venous system
Subclavian and jugular veins meet
The fluid then rapidly moves into the superior vena cava and right atrium
Subclavian and jugular vein
Drains everything else
Thoracic duct
Drains right upper quadrant
Right lymphatic duct
Drainage is uneven because of _ all lower body and empties into left brachiocephalic vein
Cisterna chili
Housed in lymph tissue
Lymphocytes
Looking for anything foreign
Dendritic cells and macrophages
Several organs have collections of lymphoid tissue as a component of their structure
Lymphoid organs
Where lymphocytes are produced and mature in bone marrow and thymus
Primary lymphoid organs
Where immune cell laws screen lymph are lymph nodes, spleen, Malts, appendix
Secondary lymphoid organs
Tonsils, Peters patch in the intestine, eyes, salivary glands, Brest
Mucosa associated lymphatic tissues
Found in tissues that are exposed tot he outside, skin, digestive tract, lugs
Dendritic cells
Dendritic cells are a sentinel immune cell
Professional antigen presenting cells
Potential threat, they tell inactive B and T cells to start searching
Exact antigen
Present in many tissues around the body and are also a professional antigen presenter cell
Macrophages
Directly and immediately fight invaders
Phagocytosis
Lymph nodes are specialized
Repositories for immune cell
Spleens second job
Giant lymph node
Have deep crypts whic trap debris and bacteria
Malts
Large molecules into blood if they can’t squeeze between gaps in cappillaries
Lymphatic vessels
