Lymphatic System Flashcards
Lymph node
Lymphoid organ that serves as a battleground for immune responses
Lymph
Fluid that drained into vessels of lymphatic system
Lymphocyte
A T cell or B cell
Antigen
Molecular configuration that certain lymphocytes recognize as nonself and that triggers immune response
Phagocyte
Cell that captures prey by phagocytosis, defend and perform cell maintinence
Complement proteins
Circulate in inactive form in vertebrate’s blood, can promote inflammation, lysis of pathogens, and stimulate phagocytes during nonspecific defenses and immune responses
Interferons
Proteins made by host cell to communicate presence of pathogen, inhibit virus reproduction in neighboring cells, 1st line of defense
Inflammatory response
Total system response to pathogen, fever
2nd line
Cell mediated response
Responding on a cellular level, specialized defense
3rd line
T - Lymphocytes
Type of white blood cell
Helper t: makes and secrets chemicals to induce t and B cells to divide
Cycotic t: touch-kills infected body cells, such as cancer
Memory T cells
Remember previous infections and then awake to fight and kill them off when they return
Helper T cells
Secretes chemics that induce t and B cells to undergo division into effector and memory cells
Cytocotic T cells
Touch-kills infected or altered body cells, such as cancer
B lymphocytes
Produces antibodies
Humoral immunity
Circulation of antibodies, 2nd line, uses B cells
