lymphatic system Flashcards
what does the lymphatic system consist of ?
- Lymph (fluid)
- Lymphatic vessels
- Lymphatic tissues and organs
- Red bone marrow
Lymphatic system functions..
- Draining interstitial fluid
- Transporting dietary lipids and lipid soluble vitamins
- Facilitating the immune response
- Preventing the spread of cancer cells
How is lymph formed
Blood plasma leaks out of the capillaries to bathe the surrounding cells, becoming interstitial fluid. Some of this fluid is pulled back into the blood capillaries at the venous end. The left over fluid needs to be drained to prevent swelling. This occurs via they lymphatic capillaries and vessels which collect the excess fluid to for lymph
What do the lymph vessels do to maintain blood pressure and volume
drain into one f the two ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system
what is chyle
fat-laden lymph
Where do lacteals (lymph capillaries joined together to makes larger vessels) drain chyle?
Cisterna chyli
The right lymphatic duct drains…
the upper right side of the body
The right lymphatic duct returns fluid to….
the right subclavian vein (and heart)
Where does the left thoracic duct drain and where does it begin?
it drains the rest of the body
it begins with the cisterna chtli
The left thoracic duct returns fluid to …..
the left subclavian vein (and heart)
where are lymph nodes found
along lymph vessles
What do Lymph nodes do
they filter lymph and activate the immune system
Within a Lymph node there is a population of …… and ……that preform survelliance
macrophages = remove or destroy proteins lymphocytes= identify pathogens and activate immune respone
Lymph nodules are collectively known as M.A.L.T what does this stand for?
Mucosa. Associated. Lymphoid. Tissue
what do tonsils do and how many do we have
Filter air and 5
where are the two palatine tonsils located
either side of the oral cavity
where are the two lingual tonsils located
at the base of the tongue
where is the pharyngeal tonsil located
on the posterior wall of the nasopharyna
Where is the thymus gland found
in the mediastinum above the heart
What id the function of the thymus gland
to produce thymic factor which is important for setting up the immune system and the development of T Lymphocytes (T cells)
Where is the spleen located
the left side of the abdominal cavity below the diaphragm
What is the function of the spleen
to filter blood
- red pulp removes worn out red blood cells
- white pulp carries out immune functions
