Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system?
System of vessels, cells, and organs that carries excess fluids to the bloodstream and filters pathogens from the blood.
What is lymph?
Interstitial fluid once it has entered the lymphatic system.
What is a lymph node?
Small, bean-shaped organ located throughout the lymphatic system. Swell when foreign material is encountered during filtration of lymph.
Summaries lymphatic system.
System is not circulatory but is one way (towards the heart).
Lymph is forced through vessels by movements of the body.
Lymph flows from lymphatic capillaries, through lymphatic vessels, and is then dumped into the circulatory system via lymphatic ducts at the confluence of the internal jugular and subclavian veins in the neck.
Where are lymphatic capillaries located?
Most tissues and organs.
Absent in brain and spinal cord, bone marrow and avascular structures.
Afferent lymphatic vessel.
Lymphatic vessel that drains into lymph nodes.
Termination of lymphatic capillaries
Drain into afferent lymphatic vessels
Termination of lymphatic vessels.
Most drain into lymphatic trunks.
What are the lymphatic trunks of the abdomen? Where do they drain?
Intestinal and lumbar trunks.
Both drain into the cisterna chyli.
Where do lumbar trunks receive lymph? Where do they drain?
Paired trunks.
Drain into the cisterna chyli.
Receive lymph from lower limbs.
What are the lymphatic trunks of the neck?
Subclavian trunks and jugular trunks.
Where do subclavian trunks receive lymph? Where do they drain?
Paired trunks.
Receive lymph from the upper limbs, breast and superior part of the anterior thoracic wall.
Drain into either right lymphatic duct or thoracic duct.
Where do jugular trunks receive lymph? Where do they drain?
Paired trunks.
Receive lymph from cephalic and cervical regions.
Drain into either right lymphatic duct or thoracic duct.
Which lymphatic duct is this?
Cisterna chyli.
Located immediately anterior to the lumbar vertebrae in the proximity of the coeliac trunk.
Receives lymph from the lower limbs, pelvic, abdominal and inferior thoracic regions via trunks.
Drained by thoracic duct.
Which lymphatic duct is this?
Thoracic duct.
Begins at the cisterna chyli.
Drains into the confluence of the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins.
Received lymph from the superior left thoracic region and the left side of the head and neck.
Which lymphatic duct is this?
Right lymphatic duct.
Drains into the confluence of the right subclavian and right internal jugular veins.
Receives lymph from the right side of the thoracic/chest region, and right side of the head and neck.
This duct may be absent.
