Q

Summaries lymphatic system.

A

System is not circulatory but is one way (towards the heart).
Lymph is forced through vessels by movements of the body.
Lymph flows from lymphatic capillaries, through lymphatic vessels, and is then dumped into the circulatory system via lymphatic ducts at the confluence of the internal jugular and subclavian veins in the neck.

14
Q

Which lymphatic duct is this?

A

Cisterna chyli.
Located immediately anterior to the lumbar vertebrae in the proximity of the coeliac trunk.
Receives lymph from the lower limbs, pelvic, abdominal and inferior thoracic regions via trunks.
Drained by thoracic duct.

15
Q

Which lymphatic duct is this?

A

Thoracic duct.
Begins at the cisterna chyli.
Drains into the confluence of the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins.
Received lymph from the superior left thoracic region and the left side of the head and neck.

Q

Which lymphatic duct is this?

A

Right lymphatic duct.
Drains into the confluence of the right subclavian and right internal jugular veins.
Receives lymph from the right side of the thoracic/chest region, and right side of the head and neck.
This duct may be absent.

17
Q

Which trunk is this?

A

Right subclavian trunk.

18
Q

Which trunk is this?

A

Right lumbar trunk.

19
Q

Where are lymphocytes produced and matured?

A

All lymphocytes produced in red bone marrow.
T-lymphocytes migrate to thymus for maturation.
B-lymphocytes mature in the bone marrow.

20
Q

What is this?

A

Thymus.
Lies anterior to the major blood vessels in the superior mediastinum of the thorax and root of the neck.
Consists of two lobes (left and right).

21
Q

Describe changes to thymus with age.

A

Young child - large lobes extend anterior to heart.
Young adult - thick elongated lobes, extend anterior to great vessels of heart but not hear itself.
Elderly adult - thin elongated bands of fibro-adipose tissue, anterior to great vessels of the heart, may be essentially absent.

22
Q

What are the primary lymphoid organs?

A

Bone marrow and thymus gland.

23
Q

What are the secondary lymphoid organs?

A

Lymph nodes, spleen and lymphoid nodules.

24
Q

What is the function of lymph nodes?

A

Produce lymphocytes and filter lymph.

25
Q

Which lymph node is this?

A

Cervical lymph nodes.
Located in neck adjacent to internal jugular vein.
Receive lymph from cephalic and cervical regions.

26
Q

Which lymph node is this?

A

Axillary lymph nodes.
Located in Axillary region.
Receive lymph from the upper limbs and 75% of breast.

27
Q

Which lymph node is this?

A

Mesenteric lymph nodes.
Located in the mesenteric of the intestines.
Receive lymph from the small and large intestines.

28
Q

Which lymph node is this?

A

Inguinal lymph nodes.
Located in the inguinal region.
Receive lymph from the lower limbs.

29
Q

What are the major functions of the spleen?

A

Filtration of blood, destruction of old erythrocytes and monitoring of blood for bacteria and foreign materials.

30
Q

What is this?

A

Gallbladder.

31
Q

What is this?

A

Liver.

32
Q

What is this?

A

Abdominal aorta.

33
Q

What is this?

A

Inferior vena cava.

34
Q

What is this?

A

Kidneys.

35
Q

What is this?

A

Spleen.

36
Q

What is this?

A

Stomach.

37
Q

General features of the spleen.

A

Lies against the thoracic diaphragm in the upper left abdominal quadrant.
Oval shape. Surrounded by a capsule. Contains lymphocytes and phagocytic cells for immune protection.
Splenic hilum - indented area where splenic blood vessels enter and leave the spleen.

38
Q

What are lymphoid nodules?

A

Dense cluster of lymphocytes without a surrounding fibrous capsule. Located in respiratory and digestive tracts (areas routinely exposed to environmental pathogens).

39
Q

What are tonsils?

A

Lymphoid nodules located along the pharynx. Important in developing immunity to oral pathogens.

40
