Lymphatic - Immune System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the primary of the lymph system?
A
• transportation
- carries fluid away from the tissue
- carries wastes away from the tissue
•Absorption
- absorbs fats and transports fat to blood (laterals)
- stores blood in the spleen
- Erythrocytosis
• Protection
- filters waste out of blood
- destroys bacteria
- antibody production
• Manufacture
- lymphocytes
- monocytes
- erythrocytes
2
Q
What is lymph and how does it circulate in the body?
A
- Clear, watery, yellow fluid derived from the body tissues that contain WBC and circulates throughout the lymphatic system returning to the venous blood stream thru the thoracic duct.
- Acts to remove bacteria and certain proteins from the tissues, transports fat from the small intestine and supply mature lymphocytes to the blood.
3
Q
What are phagocytes and through which process do white blood cells remove microorganism, cell debris, and old/ damaged cells.
A
• Phagocytosis is the process where WBC remove micro organisms, cell debris and blood cells that are damaged, old or abnormal by engulfing them and literally gobbling them up.
4
Q
List he functions of the lymph nodes, tonsils, andenoids.
A
- Lymph nodes- filter out and destroy pathogens.
- Tonsils- form a ring of lymphatic tissues around pharynx. This tissue forms a protective barrier for substances entering the oral and respiratory passages.
5
Q
What is the function of the spleen?
A
- Acts as a storage container, holding a supply of 100-300mL of blood as well as 30% of the body’s total platelets.
- WBC and RBC production
6
Q
What is the thymus gland and list it’s function. How and why does it change from birth to death?
A
- Thymus gland is allocated in the mediastinum above the heart. It consists of two fused loves and is divided into outer part (cortex) mostly composed of immature T- lymphocytes.
- the thymus is most active during the prenatal period and early years of life. It grows until puberty and the gradually shrinks in size as we age.
