Lymphatic and Immune System Flashcards
Study Guide
Foreign substances that trigger an immune system response.
Antigens (anti-against, gen-producing)
Disease causing organisms like bacteria and viruses.
Pathogens (path/o-disease, -gen-producing)
Immunity transferred from mother to child through breastmilk.
Passive Immunity
Immunity developed through infection or vaccination.
Active Immunity (activus-doing, working)
The body’s natural defense system.
Innate immunity (in-in, natus-born)
Immunity obtained from vaccination.
Artificial immunity (artificialis-made by art/skill)
Found in the throat, they help trap pathogens (tonsillae = almond shaped tissue).
Tonsils
The largest organ in the immune system, filters blood.
Spleen (splen/o = spleen)
Produces T-cells, crucial for immune response.
Thymus (thym/o = thymus gland)
Produces B-cells, which create antibodies.
Bone Marrow (myel/o = bone marrow/spinal cord)
Collects and drains interstitial fluid (inter-between, stitial-standing) back to the blood stream.
Lymphatic System function
Returns filtered lymph and white blood cells into circulation.
Lymph Vessels (Lymphangi/o = lymph vessels)
Disease of the lymph nodes.
Lymphadenopathy (Lymphadeno-lymph node, -pathy- disease).
Enlargement of the spleen.
Splenomegaly (splen/o=spleen, -megally = enlargement).
Surgical removal of the thymus.
Thymectomy (thym/o = thymus, -ectomy = removal)
Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels.
Lymphangitis (lymphangi/o = lymph vessel, -itis = inflammation)
Weakened immune system.
Immunodeficiency (immun/o = immune, -deficiency = lack of)
Condition where the body attacks itself.
Autoimmune Disease (auto = self, immune = immunity)
Disease-causing
Pathogenic (path/o = disease, -genic = producing)
Three Sets of Tonsils:
;)
Palatine Tonsils
Palat/o = palate, -ine = pertaining to.
Lingual Tonsils
Lingu/o = tongue, -al = pertaining to
Pharyngeal Tonsils (Adenoids)
Pharyng/o = throat, -eal = pertaining to
Lymph Node Locations:
Located in the underarm
Axillary (axill/o = armpit)
Located in the groin area
Inguinal (inguin/o = groin)
Located in the neck
Cervical (cervic/o = neck)
Found in the chest cavity (cannot be palpated)
Mediastinal (mediastin/o = middle section of chest)
Immunity and Disease Resistance:
Gained through vaccination
Acquired (artificial) Immunity
From prior infection, such as having chickenpox
Natural Immunity
Includes barriers like skin and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Non-Specific Immunity
Proteins created to fight specific antigen
Antibodies (anti = against, -body = substance)
Specialized lymphocytes produced in the thymus
T- cells/ Thymus cells
Created in the bone marrow, responsible for making antibodies; the body produces four types of T-cells.
B-cells/Bone Marrow Cells
