Lyme Disease Patho
reportable, systemic infection transferred by deer ticks infected with a spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi)
some don’t experience stages 1/2; antibiotics may not work in any stage leading to permanent joint and CNS damage
Localized Stage 1
3-30 days after bite, erythema migrans
flu-like symptoms with muscle/joint pain/stiffness
amoxicillin
if no treatment, symptoms disappear in 4-5 weeks
Stage 2
2-12 weeks after bite, early disseminated stage
dysrhythmias
dyspnea
dizziness
palpitations
CNS disorders (meningitis)
facial paralysis
peripheral neuritis
ceftriaxone for 30 days
Stage 3
months to yrs after bite accompanied by arthritis and permanent joint damage and CNS damage

occupation/recreation (camping, etc.)
summer time
Lyme Disease Meds
antibiotic therapy (antibiotic, route and duration vary depending on stage and organ involvement); may fail
management of joint inflammation is similar to other types of arthritis treatment
vaccine previously available
