Hallux Valgus
great toe drifts laterally at the 1st metatarsal joint, becomes enlarged and leads to bunion
pain with shoes and walking; associated with poor fitting shoes
women > men
narrow toes and high heels
custom made shoes and podiatrist referral
Bunionectomy
bunion treatment
pain and neurovascular checks (6-12 weeks recovery)
Hammertoe
dorsiflexion of any MTP joint with plantar flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint next to it
2nd toe can be affected
corns may develop on dorsal side of toe
can’t walk/wear shoes comfortably
can also affect lateral side
Plantar Fasciitis
inflammation of the arch of the foot
middle/older adulthood, athletics, obesity
pain especially during weight bearing activities and when getting out of bed or being stiff
ice, stretches, well-fitting shoes, NSAIDs, steroids, time
Foot Disorder Nursing Care
healing is generally slower in LE due to reduced blood flow, especially in presence of comorbidities (ex. PVD)
focus on ambulation, ADLs, and safety
