Why is Luther’s relationship with Staupitz described as “the most important acquaintance which Luther ever formed”?
Staupitz actually encouraged Luther to study Scripture. He also nurtured many of the spiritual questions Luther was beginning to have. He was one of the primary instigators of Luther’s conversion to evangelicalism.
Why was Luther very concerned about becoming a priest?
A priest was to be a mediator between God and man. Luther was so conscious of his sinfulness that he was terrified to hold such an exalted position.
Pages 114-115 lay out basic differences between the Catholic and Protestant faiths. Summarize the contents of this section.
Catholic: God is foremost a judge to be feared; good works are sought as a recommendation to God.
Protestant: God is a loving Savior who forgives gratuitously, meeting the sinner where he is and bearing his load.
Why was Luther’s study of Greek and Hebrew crucial to his spiritual formation?
The only Bible he had at his disposal was the Latin Vulgate, which in his estimation was full of errors. Being able to read the Bible in the original languages would provide a significant advantage to overcoming these errors.
Why was the oath that Luther took upon receiving his doctor of divinity an important part of Luther’s later defense of the Reformation?
Luther had taken an oath to teach purely and sincerely to the Scriptures. Catholic leaders supposed there was a substantial agreement between the teachings of the church and those of the Bible. Once Luther came under the conviction that the church’s teachings were not biblical, he then used the oath he had taken as justification for his agitation.
In 1509, Luther was called upon to begin preaching. He was extremely reluctant. How did he overcome this? What spiritual lessons could be learned from this incident?
He said, “When I go up into the pulpit, I do not look upon any one. I think them to be only so many blocks before me, and I speak out the words of my God.” You give your opinion on the spiritual lessons.
