Lustman Et Al : Measures Of Non Adherance Flashcards
What’s the method?
A randomised controlled double blind study.
How many patients?
60
What did the patients have
Type 1 or type 2 diabetes and diagnosed with depression
How do they gather the sample?
Volunteer sample
What was the procedure ?
Patents randomly assigned to either of 2 groups - given fluoxetine (used to treat depression) or given an identical looking pill as a placebo
Patients and doctors didn’t know which group
Patients assessed for depression
How were patients assessed for depression?
Psychometric tests and their adherence to their diabetic medical regime was assessed by measuring their blood sugar levels
What happened after 8 weeks?
The group given the real fluxetine had far healthier blood glucose levels
Patients who reported less depressive symptoms more regularly Monitored their blood glucose levels
What were the results ?
Patients given fluxetine =lower depression levels
Fluxetine = lower levels of ghb which indicated their improved adherence
If depressions was being medicated , they were more likely to adhere to their diabetic reigime
What were the conclusions?
Measuring blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes indicated their level of adherence to prescribed medical reigimes.
Greater adherence was shown by patients who were less depressed
Not being anxious or depressed improves compliance with medical requests
Aim?
To see if there was a link between depression and non adherence in diabetic patients medication.
