Lungs Flashcards
What routed does air take to get to the lungs?
mouth trachea broncus bronchioles alveoli
What happens within the alveoli ?
Gas exchange
What are the features of the alveoli?
moist thin walls = short diffusion pathway
an abundance of alveoli = increase surface area
many tiny blood vessels = maximise diffusion
What is a blood capillary?
Tiny blood vessels
What is a rig of cartilage?
c-shaped rings
What is a mucus secreting cell?
cells the release slimy liquid (mucus)
What is the cilia?
tiny hairs
What are the bronchioles?
tiny tubes
What is the alveoli?
tiny air sacks at the end of the bronchioles
What is the trachea?
the wind pipe
What is the purpose of the blood capillary?
they bring dissolved carbon and carry away dissolved oxygen
What is the purpose of the rings of cartilage?
to keep the trachea open
What is the purpose of the mucus secreting cells?
to keep the surfaces moist and trap dust particles
What is the purpose of the cilia?
waft the mucus up to the nose and mouth
What is the purpose of the bronchioles?
carry air to/from the alveoli
