Why?
Illnesses:
Fremitus:
Air
COPD, emphysema, pneumothorax
Fremitus: decreased
Massive pleural effusion does what to fremitus?
Decreases - it stops lungs from vibrating because fluid is outside lungs
Rhonchi (sonorous wheeze)
Low pitched indicating large bronchial or tracheal obstruction
Sibilant wheezing (musical rales, fine crackles)
High pitches, usually asthma
Stridor - inspiratory crowing
Highest pitch noise indicating a medical emergency
Prolonged expiration
COPD - air locked in
Respiratory lag
Pneumothorax
Friction rub
Pleurisy (rapid, shallow breathing)
Friction rub heard in abdomen indicates
enlarged viscera
Adventitious sounds: fluid in lungs
Bronchophony-
Egophony -
Whispered pectoriloquy -
Bronchophony- spoken word is clearer
Egophony - “ee ==> aa”
Whispered pectoriloquy - whisper is louder
Cheyne stokes
Rhythmical apnea (brain lesion)
