Lungs Flashcards
What do the alveoli do?
Carry out gas exchange in the body.
What is the alveoli surrounded by?
a network of blood capillaries.
What does the blood contain that passes next to the alveoli?
lots of carbon dioxide and very little oxygen as it has just returned from the lungs.
How does oxygen diffuse?
out of the alveolus (high concentration) and into the blood (low concentration).
How does carbon dioxide diffuse?
Out of the blood (high concentration) and into the alveolus (low concentration) to be breathed out.
Where is oxygen released?
red blood cells (high concentration) and diffuses into the body cells (low concentration)
Where is carbon dioxide released?
body cells (high concentration) and into the blood (low concentration) and then carried back to the lungs.
