Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
What does the circulatory system do?
Carries food and oxygen to every cell in the body.
What is the circulatory system made up of?
The heart, blood vessels and blood
What does the right ventricle do?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen to then return to the heart.
What does the left ventricle do?
pumps oxygenated around the organs of the body, it gives up its oxygen to the body cells and the deoxygenated blood returns to the hart to be pumped to the lungs.
What are the walls of the heart made of?
muscle tissue
What does the heart do to pump blood around the body?
the heart contracts
What does the heart have so blood flows in the correct direction?
valves
What does blood flow into?
atria from the vena cava and pulmonary vein.
How does blood go into the ventricles?
the atria contracts.
Why do the ventricles contract?
To force the blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta then out the heart.
Where does blood flow to once it has left the heart?
Organs through arteries and then returns to the heart through veins.
What do the coronary arteries do?
They branch off the aorta and surround the heart making sure it gets oxygenated blood.
What is your resting heart rate controlled by?
A group of cells in your right atrium.
What do the cells do in your right atrium?
produce small electrical impulses which cause the muscle cells to contract.
What does a pace maker do?
It is a small device that that has a wire going through it which produces an electrical current to keep the heart beating regular.
