Lungs Flashcards
What are the functions of the Lung?
- Governs qi and respiration
- Dominates dispersing, controls skin, manifest in body hair
- Dominates descending, regulates water passages
- Opens into the nose
What are important acupoints for the Lung?
Front Mu - LU 1
Back Shu - BL 13
Yuan - LU 9
Luo - LU 7
Xi Cleft - LU 6
Mother - LU 9
Son - LU 5
5 Shu: LU 5/8/9/10/11
Describe the importance of LU 1.
Front Mu point.
Regulates the normal dispersing and descending of LU Qi. Can also D&D body fluids which help regulate water passages
- Clear heat / use LU 5 (water) or LU 10 (ying spring)
- Transform phlegm / use ST 40 (phlegm) or LU 5 (water pt good for water accumulation)
- Descend LU Qi / use LU 7
- Disseminate LU Qi
- Regulate water passages
> for acute edema use LI 4 (command pt) or LI 6 (regulate water passages)
> for urinary dysfunction use ST 28, REN 3 & REN 4, BL 28/34
Describe the importance of LU 7.
Luo point.
Used for excess and deficiency conditions
- Alleviates channel
- Promote descending fx of the Lung
- Luo pt to expel wind
- Confluent pt to open and regulate Ren Mai
> for urinary/uterus dysfx use REN 3 & 4 or SP 6 (distal) - Command pt to benefit head and nape
> for headache (Bai Lao), stiff neck (LI 4), deviation of mouth and eyes (SJ 17)
Describe the importance of LU 11.
Jing Well Point:
- Clears heat and removes obstruction
- Fullness below the HT
- Revives consciousness / use DU 26, HT, 1, Shixuan, Qiduan
- Benefits the throat / use LI 4 or LU 10
- Sore/swollen throat / use REN 22 or SI 17
Describe the importance of LU 10.
Ying Spring Point.
- Clears heat from the uppermost reaches of the channel
- Benefits the throat
> Pain, swelling, congestion in the throat or voice loss - Clears heat from the organ
- Clear LU heat
> rebellious qi = cough / use REN 22 or LU 7
- Bleeding
> cough/vomit blood, blood in urine
Describe the importance of LU 9.
Yuan Source, Mother, Shu Stream point.
Used for deficiency conditions. To restore or tonify LU Qi.
- Nourish LU Yin
- Promote descending fx of the LU
- Activate channel, relieve wrist pain
- Influential pt to regulate and harmonize the 100 vessels
- Yuan/Mother/Shu Stream pt to tonify LU Qi and transform phlegm
> cough with watery phlegm, dyspnea, wheezing, asthma
Describe the importance of LU 8.
Jing River & Metal point.
Good at descending LU Qi. Helps with cough and wheezing.
Local pt = wrist pain
Jing-River and Metal pt = cough, wheezing, dyspnea
Describe the importance of LU 5.
Son, He-Sea, Shu Stream point.
- Activate the channel, relieve pain
> arm pain, restricted motion
Water Point:
Regulate water passage
- phlegm/urinary retention
- acute edema
- enuresis or frequent urination
Clear heat from the LU, descend rebellious LU Qi
- heat tends to rise up
> cough, wheezing, shortness of breath
- heat condenses fluid
> brown, yellow, green phlegm
- heat ruptures blood vessels
> nosebleed, cough blood
Describe the importance of LU 6.
Xi-Cleft point.
Acute
> Invasion of LU by external pathogen
- acute cough, swelling and pain in the throat
Excess
> clear heat from the LU = LU 5/10/11
> disseminate and descend LU Qi = REN 17 (local), LU 6 (chest pain), PC 6 (move qi in the chest)
Bleeding
> cough up or vomit blood
Points that descend LU Qi located at the neck/chest.
REN: REN 17, REN 22
ST: ST 12/13/14
KD: KD 25/27, combo with lower abdomen - KD 3
LU: LU 1/2
SP: SP 19/20
Which points regulate the LU function?
Front Mu - LU 1
Back-Shu - BL 13
Lung Channel
Points that opens the chest.
Local = REN 17
Distal = PC 6/7
Others = LU 1, ST 40 (LU is container of phlegm), SP 4
Points that resolve phlegm.
Resolve phlegm = ST 40
Source of phlegm from SP:
SP 3 - yuan source
SP 4 - resolve phlegm
SP 6 - restore T&T, promote urination, drain damp
SP 9
Storage of phlegm from LU:
LU 5, add LU 7 to D&D Qi
Move qi:
LU 7
PC 6 & REN 17
Points that regulate water passages.
Upper Jiao = LU 7
> facial edema:
Distal - LI 4, LI 6, ST 41/43
Local - DU 23/26
Lower Jiao = REN 3/4/5/9, ST 28
> bowel = ST 28
> bladder = REN 3/4
> edema = SP 6/9, KD 7/10, LR 8/10
