Lungs Flashcards
pleural cavity
the potential space between the two pleura (visceral and parietal) of the lungs
what happens if air enters the pleural cavity?
collapsed lung
visceral pleura
attached directly to the lungs and adjoining structures. Lack of sensory innervation (not highly sensitive to pain)
parietal pluera
attached to the wall of the thoracic cavity and innervated by the intercostal nerves and phrenic nerve
trachea
windpipe, which divides into smaller bronchi.
bronchi
major airways branching off the trachea into the vertebrate lung
Mediastinum
central compartment of the thoracic cavity. It contains the heart. (center of the chest)
diagpragm
sheet of muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities in mammals responsible for breathing
phrenic nerve
controls the diaphragm, cervical nerves 3,4,5 are what allow for this phrenic nerve to work
