Why are side reins used when lungeing
Maintain control of horse - naughty boisterous
Encourage taking up contact with the bit
Maintaining straightness
Prevent horse turning head to one or other side
What are the aims of lungeing
Control of horse at end of line
Confident and proficient using equipment
Moving horse forward in a balanced way - may not be able to do canter
Assess horses balance rhythm and impulsion
Teach horse to be obedient to voice
Exercise, work or improve way of going of the horse
What are the methods of holding a lungeline
Loops all in one hand
Loops in other hand to lunge - best for strong horse
Loops back and forth in one hand
What shape will be made for you, the horse, the whip and the rein when lungeing correctly
Triangle
How can you encourage a lazy horse to move forward actively on the lunge
Move your position more to their hind, producing a right angled triangle
Use voice light and higher pitched
Walk with the horse

Why is it important to keep the shape of the circle round?
A round circle makes the horse work more effectively

Lots of transitions, circling in and out, pole work
What criteria would you use to judge whether this horse has been exercised sufficiently
Done work: raised heart and respiratory rate, may have sweat
Learnt something new or improved in way of going
Before gets tired
What problems may occur if horse not sufficiently balanced in canter
Going onto wrong lead, or disunited
