Lung Physiology Lectures Flashcards
What is tidal volume?
the amount of air that moves in and out per breath
500mL
What is the vital capacity?
the amount of air you are able to breathe in when you breathe in as much as you can
6000mL
What is residual volume?
the amount of air present in the lungs or they would collapse
1200mL
What is the total capacity?
Residual Volume + Vital Capacity
amount in your lungs at all times PLUS the amount you can breathe in if you breathe in as much as you can
What is minute ventilation?
Tidal Volume x Respiratory Rate
how much air that is being moved in and out x how often it is being breathed in and out
What is alveolar ventilation?
(Tidal Volume - Dead Space) x Respiratory Rate
alveolar ventilation considers the DEAD SPACE
What is dead space?
the part of the airways that do not allow for gas exchange
150mL of air in these tissues at any one time
What is transpulmonary pressure?
the difference in pressure in the alveoli and the pressure in the intrapleural pressure
P alv - P ip = P transpulmonary
What is the pressure of the alveolar IN BETWEEN breaths?
between breaths it is equal to the pressure of the atmosphere which is 0mmHg
P atm = P alv
What is lung compliance?
the change in volume related to the change in pressure
difference in volume / difference in transpulmonary pressure
Δ Vol / Δ TP
