Lung immunity Flashcards
What is innate immunity?
Non-specific immunity you’re born with
What is adaptive immunity?
Immunity learned over time and exposure to different pathogens
What makes up innate immunity?
Non-immune: epithelium, mucous, coughing
Immune: phagocytosis
What makes up adaptive immunity?
T lymphocytes (CD8 & CD4 cells) B lymphocytes (produce antibodies) Immunological memory
What is an antigen?
Foreign proteins that stimulate an immune response
What are antibodies?
Protein specific to an antigen
Where are T lymphocytes produced?
Bone marrow, mature in thymus gland
Where are B lymphocytes produced?
Bone marrow
Which antibodies are involved in hypersensitivity reactions?
IgM, IgG and IgE
What is cell necrosis?
Cells swell and lyse, releasing its contents which can damage surrounding tissue - results in inflammation and phagocytosis of necrosed cell
What is cell apoptosis?
Cell is switched off and becomes inert - is phagocytosed by tissue macrophages and there’s no tissue damage
What is an epitope?
Specific region on an antigen that’s recognised by a specific antibody
Define inflammation
Local response to infection/ injury
What are the 5 cardinal signs of inflammation?
Calor (heat) Rubor (redness) Dolor (pain) Tumour (swelling) Functio laesa (loss of function)
What initiates acute inflammation in the lungs?
Alveolar macrophages
