Lung function tests: volume and rates Flashcards
What is Apnea
Temporary breathing cessation (>1 skipped breaths)
What is Dyspnea
Laboured, gasping breathing, shortness of breath
What is Hypernea
Increased breathing rate and depth to exercise, pain and other conditions
What is hyperventilation
Increased pulmonary ventilation in excess of metabolic demand
What is hypoventilation
Reduced pulmonary ventialtion
What is orthopnea
Dyspnea when lying down
What is respiratory arrest
Permanent cessation of breathing
What is tachypnea
Accelerated respiration
What is spirometry
Lung function test that measures volume of air breathed in and out and generates tracings of air flow .
Provide examples of influential factors on normal lung function test results
Gener, height, age.
What is COPD
Airflow obstruction and is progressive. Caused by smoking. Rapid and worsening of symptoms.
What would obstructive conditions e.g COPD look like on a volume time graph
Airway narrowing reduces the speed at which air can be expired
FVC nearly normal
FEV1 reduced
FEV1/FVC ratio <70%
What would restrictive conditions e.g pulmonary fibrosis look like on a volume time graph
No airway narrowing so speed of air expired is normal
Low FVC
Low FEV1 in proportion to FVC reduction
FEV1/FVC ratio >70%
