Lumbar Spine Flashcards
What is a non-mechanical viscerogenic etiology of lumbar back pain?
Renal Colic, Endometriosis
What is a non mechanical, vasculogenic etiology of lumbar back pain?
Abdominal Aortic Aneursym
Sacralisation of L5 is defined as what?
L5 fuses to S1
Lumbarisation of S1 is defined as?
S1 Fusions with L5
What is the general rule regarding lumbar and sacral spinal movementg?
They move in opposite directions
Ex: Lumbar flexion –> Sacral Extension
What is the resulting motor weakness associated with an injury to L4?
What is an appropriate screening examination associated with it?
L4: Extenson of Quadriceps
Exam: Squat and Rise
Motor weakness of L5 is associated with?
What is an appropriate exam test with this?
1) Dorsiflexion of the great toe and foot
2) Heel walking
What is a motor weakness associated with damage to S1?
Also, what would be an appropriate exam test associated with this?
1) Plantar flexion of the great toe and foot
2) Walking on toes
What are the four red flags for lower back pain?
1) Major trauma mech 2) Ages > 50 y.o or < 20 y.o 3) History of cancer 4) Cauda equina symptoms
At what level does the spinal cord terminate?
L1-L2
What are two possible causes of spinal canal compromise?
1) Hypertrophy of the posterior longitudinal ligament and 2) THickening of the Ligamentum Flavum
What is the etiology of Cauda Equina syndrome?
Edema building up in the spinal cord –> compression of the Cauda equina –> progressive weakness and paralysis of the lower extremity
What are the visceral structures associated with a perilumbrical Chapman’s point?
Adrenal, Kidney, Bladder
What are the visceral structures associated with a 5th ICS Chapman’s point?
5th ICS: Stomach (left) & liver (right)
What are the visceral structures associated with a 6th ICS in regards to Chapman’s points?
6th ICS: Stomach (left) & live/gallbladder (right)
