Born in Spain from a Roman Catholic family in well off class;
After being expelled, he studied at the University of Madrid with Salvador Dali and other poets
1925: left Spain for Paris
1929: made a short film with Salvador Dali “An Andalusian Dog” using only one rule: exclude anything could be interpreted as logical. The film was enthusiastically received by the French surrealists
