LTM retrieval failure Flashcards
retrieval failure
get/fail to retrieve information due to insufficient cues
encoding specifically principle
greater the similarity between encoding event and the retrieval event, the greater the likelihood of recall
context dependent (environmental) forgetting study
Golden and Baddeley 1975
Golden and Baddeley 1975
sample
13 males + 5 females from diving club
Golden and Baddeley 1975
materials
36 words recorded on a tape, scuba diving gear, DVC sets
Golden and Baddeley 1975
method
participants split into 4 groups that did all conditions in different order
had to recall a list of words in different conditions:
- submerged, submerged
- submerged, land
- land, submerged
- land, land
Golden and Baddeley 1975
results
40% lower recall in mismatch conditions
state dependent forgetting study
Carter and Cassaday 1998
examples of state dependent forgetting
tiredness, medication, emotions
Carter and Cassaday 1998
participants
17 women + 7 men
ages 18-21
Carter and Cassaday 1998
aim
see if anti-histamine had an effect on recall
Carter and Cassaday 1998
procedure
had to recall words in 4 different conditions:
- AH, AH
- AH, placebo
- placebo, AH
- placebo, placebo
Carter and Cassaday 1998
results
higher recall when state the same as original memory
AO3 strength
- practical applications
- useful for police when trying to get eye witness statements
- take individual back to the setting of the crime
- real world application
AO3 weakness (recall)
- recall vs recognition
- Godden + Baddeley re-did thier test however used recognition to test memory instead of word recall
- results were the same for all 4 conditions
- weakens theory as only applies to one type of memory
