LT#1: Observing Matter Terminology Flashcards
LT#1: Atomic Structure
Define Ductility
The ability to stretch a substance into a wire
Define Physical Property
A property that can be measured without changing the chemical composition of the substance
Define Qualitative Observation
Describes a characteristic of a substance using written descriptive terms only
Define Heterogeneous Mixture
Can see multiple ingredients which separate at rest
Define Compound
2 or more elements chemically combined
Define Malleability
The ability to pound a substance into a sheet
Define Chemical Property
A property that describes how a chemical reacts with other substances
Define Pure Substance
All the particles which make up the substance are the same
Define Matter
Anything with mass, volume and made up of atoms
Define Mixture
A combination of different kinds of particles that retain their own properties.
Define Element
Cannot be broken down. One type of atom or a diatomic molecule
Define Homogeneous Mixture
Contains multiple ingredients but only looks like one thing
Define Quantitative Observation
Describes a characteristic of a substance using numerical measurements or calculations
