LT#1: Dissolving and Solubility Flashcards
Is making a solution a physical or chemical reaction?
Why?
Physical
Dissolving is a state change and can be reversed
Define Solute
Substance that dissolves
Define Solvent
Substance that dissolves the solute. It is present in the largest amount.
Define Solution
A homogeneous mixture where one substance dissolves into another.
Define Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that dissolves in a given quantity of solvent at a certain temperature.
Define Soluble
> 1 g per 100 ml will dissolve
Define Insoluble
<0.1g per 100 ml will dissolve
Define Sparingly or Slightly Soluble
Between 0.1g and 1g will dissolve
Define Unsaturated Solution
Can dissolve more solute
Define Saturated Solution
No more solute will dissolve. Sometimes extra solid visible in container.
What is necessary for a solute to dissolve?
Solute must be attracted to Solvent by a compatible IMF
The general solubility rule is…
“like dissolves like”
How does increasing temperature affect the solubility of a solid solute?
Increases solubility
How does increasing temperature affect the solubility of a liquid solute?
No Affect
How does increasing temperature affect the solubility of a gas solute?
Decreases solubility
