Q

explain 8 main features of the prologue?

A
  • crescendo at the start
  • the initial two bar idea is treated sequentially (the melody moves up or down) with the accompanying bass and tom’s fanfare- like motif adding even more gravitas.
  • many sporting chords are diatonic
  • bubblegum pop - yummy, yummy,yummy/ sugar,sugar
  • The initial vocal line is sung in unison by the three female voices, with the lyrics set syllabically (one note per syllable).
  • It is repeated and changed to a D major chord to transition to the next song and its to tick the audience so it allows u to start the next section for the next one which starts with G
  • vocalists sing in close three part- harmonies using typical 3rds nad 6ths with the middle vocal line making use of the notes of G major pentatonic scale.
  • at the end -there is a three bar melody begins with the interval of a minor 3rd and the use of repeated notes, before becoming more scalic

-A syncopated ostinato(short melodic phrase) is created in the final section and with the use of repeated notes emphasising the lyrics before the song ends unconventionally in G major.

Q

explain 8 main features of mushnik and son?

A
  • Mushnik is portrayed as jewish and there are features of Klezmer music in the song. Klezmer music relates to music which draws on centuries old jewish traditions including Roma music, eastern European folk music and early jazz.
  • The first sung phrase of verse 1 is sung fairly loudly and begins with an anacrusis.

-The bass uses the strong calypso/tressillo ‘332’ rhythm.

  • The chords change every two bars in the first part of the verse between the tonic chord (C minor) to flattened supertonic chord (Db major) and that surprises people because major is meant for happiness but the song is in a minor chord
  • At the end of verse 2 there is a seven note homophonic/chordal melodic figure, which is a melodic inversion
  • ascending glissando (slide e.g. on a violin changing from first to second position) It goes into a four note hook
  • melodic writing is now more disjunct (not next to each other- leaps) and with the use of the 6th and 7th intervals(really big) and the use of a descending sequence (repeat something but you go up a note or down a note) towards the end of the first phrase
  • The song has. Syncopated motifs with the use of repeated notes and they are used both in the vocal melody and in the subsequent bars of band accompaniment.
  • 4/4 metre
  • Fast tempo
  • Use of harmonic minor scale (C minor) (7th note is raised)

A
  • AABA form
  • Through composed- no repeating sections and no structure and always bringing in new sections
  • Three bar introduction, plant sings the initial melody which contains the notes Bb, Eb which are found in the blues scale of C (3rd, 5th and 7th are flat)
  • Repetitive two note riff drives it forward with chromatic notes and a band accompaniment
Structure of verse 1 - 12 bar blues - (harmony)
  • In verse 1 it has more of a motown feel ( motown’s name was rooted in industry and community - early 1960s as it was the car producing capital of USA
  • section B- Three slow moving bars with a regular bass accompaniment
Chord abruptly change- pase, leading to the lyric crave

-gospel section- Musical style to gospel
Came directly from christian church music- had an influence of pop music in 1960s
Piano or organ, tambourines, bass lines, vola harmonies

-Descending chromatic chords are reinforced with a Cross rhythm or triplet rhythm

  • Agreement between seymour and audrey 2 is conveyed with repetition of the lyrics before the song then moves into an 8 bar section
    Question and answer
The musical material is a development of material used earlier in the song and is based around blues
