LSO 9: Non-beam Hazards Flashcards
What is Non- beam Hazards?
A class of hazards that result from factors other than direct human exposure to a laser beam
What are types of Non-beam Hazards?
Physical, chemical, biological, mechanical and ergonomic
Why to worry?
No death due to the beam, same not true for non-beam hazards, workers : electrocution, Patients : fire
What is physical hazards: collateral and plasma radiation
12…..Radio frequency leakage.
Physical hazards: X-ray Radiation : Thyratron switches and free electron
Voltage > 12 v
What is Physical hazards: Fire
Always there is fire hazards with class 4 lasers With the class 3B: always focus to create an irradiance > 10W/cm2
Physical hazards: Explosion hazards
combustible dust, arc lamp and filament lamps
Physical Hazards: Noise
Potentially hazardous high noise can be created from : high voltage capacitor discharges, laser peening
What is the permissible dbA for 8 hrs work schedule?
90 dba
Physical Hazards: Temperature extremes
Can generate a great deal of heat - cooling liquids, cryogenic fluids. Increased humidity or condensation
Chemical Hazards: What is Laser Eye hazards?
Liquid dye used as lasing medium, to control hazards, treat all dyes as hazardous chemicals, use in chemical fume hoods, appropriate PPR use
What are the control of compressed Gas hazards?
SOPs, store hazardous gases in an appropriate exhausted enclosure, permanently pipe the gas to the laser, secured cylinders, ensure regulators are in good condition
Chemical Hazards:LGAC
can create air contaminants
What are the protection against LGAC?
Respiratory protection, isolation of process, exhaust ventilation system
What is Ergonomics Laser Hazards
poor work station layout, repetitive motion injuries to arms, hands, and wrists
limited work space that can exacerbate other hazards such as mechanical and electrical hazards
unusual work patterns ( different work shifts)
