What is bronchitis?
Inflammation of trachea and main airways
What is bronchiolitis?
Inflammation of small airways of the lungs by viral infection
What is the mechanism for bronchitis?
Disturbed mucociliary clearance. Minor airway malacia
What organisms cause bronchitis?
Haemophilis, pneumococcus, Adenovirus, RSV
What organisms cause bronchiolitis?
RSV, parainfluenza type III, HMPV
What is the mechanism for bronchiolitis?
Bronchioles swollen
Lining of cells die
Tubes blocked with debri and pus
Symptoms of bronchitis
Loose, rattily cough
Post-tussive vomit
Symptoms of bronchiolitis
Nasal stuffiness
Tachypnoea
Poor feeding
Signs of bronchiolitis
Crackles with/without wheeze
Investigations for bronchiolitis
Nasopharyngeal aspirate
Oxygen sats
Treatment for bronchitis and bronchiolitis
Observation
Reassure and wait
Possibly antibiotics for bronchiolitis if had for over a month to relieve symptoms but generally not
