(sare metalica ce confera o culoare specifica flacarii)

Descompunerea oxidantului:
2KClO₃(s) –(t°C)–> 2KCl(s) + 3O₂(g)

Arderea combustibilului:
S(s) + O₂(g) → SO₂(g); C(s) + O₂(g) → CO₂(g)

Caracterul reducator al solutiei de KIO₃
(Nota: KIO₃ este in principal un oxidant;
aceasta experienta arata probabil ca este oxidat in continuare la KIO₄ de catre oxidanți puternici):

KMnO₄ + H₂SO₄(dil) + KIO₃ → oxidarea iodatului la periodat
