Parasomnias
4 categories of sleep disorders
-dyssomnias
-parasomnias
-sleep disorders associated with other medical or psychiatric disorders
-proposed sleep disorders, which pregnancy- induced sleep disruptions
-most common of sleep disorders
-female> male
-increase with age, psychological discomfort, multiple health problems
-insufficient or no restorative sleep despite adequate opportunity to sleep
-can be acute/transient or chronic
Dyssomnias Insomnia
Sleep difficulty in which other causes of sleep disruption have been ruled out or treated
Dyssomnias Primary insomnia
-daytime sleep attacks, cataplexy, hallucinations at onset of sleep, sleep paralysis
-not progressive disorder, but disabling & difficult to treat
-daytime sleep periods are usually brief
-onset rare fore age of 5 or after age of 50
Dyssomnias narcolepsy
Repetitive movement of big toe with flexion of ankle, knee, & hip during sleep
Periodic limb movement disorder
-neurological disorder
-irresistible urge to move the legs
-may be primary or secondary
Restless leg syndrome
-serious disorder
-brief periods of breathing cessation for 10 seconds or longer
-often accompanied by hypopnea which decreases arterial oxygen saturation

Dyssomnias sleep apnea
-d/t upper airway obstruction
-characterized by snoring, disrupted sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness
Obstructive apnea
-d/t disorders affecting respiratory center in brain
-rare
Central sleep apnea
-undesirable physical phenomena such as: Nightmares, somnambulism, sleep terrors, bruxism, enuresis
-sleepwalking, sleep terrors & bed-wetting often seen in children
-sleepwalking & sleep terrors may occur with poorly controlled cardiac insufficiency after myocardial infraction
Parasomnias
-repeated episodes of awakening from sleep
-usually between 4 & 12 years old
-gradually resolves & typically disappears during adolescence
-typical episodes: child sits up abruptly in bed, appears frightened & demonstrates signs of extreme anxiety
-until the agitation subsides, effectors to comfort a futile
-usually no memory o the episode
