Lower respiratory tract Flashcards
What is bronchiectasis
Abnormal permanent dilation of subsegmental airways
3 classifications of bronchiestasis
- Cylindrical/tubular: bronchi that do not end blindly but communicate with lung parenchyma
- Saccular: follows a major pulmonary infection or from a foreign body
- Varicose: a mixture of both
- Pseudobronchiectasis: temporal cylindrical dilation of bronchus after acute pneumonic process
Pathophysiology of bronchiectasis
Impaired removal of excess mucus Bacterial colonization Infection Progressive lung damage Dilation of bronchus
Causes of bronchiectasis
Cystic fibrosis
Tumors (intrinsic and extrinsic)
Infection
Scarring secondary to TB
Clinical features of bronchiectasis
Frequent bronchopulmonary infections
Bad breath order
Daily sputum discharge and low exercise tolerance
Management of bronchiectasis
Physiotherapy
Antibiotics
Immunoglobulins
Surgical
What surgical management is chosen for bronchiectasis
Thoracoscopy is preferred over thoracotomy
What is a lung abscess
Collection of pus situated superficially in the lung
What is a destroyed lung ?
Total and irreversible destruction of one lung due to bronchopulmonary infections
Surgical management for destroyed lung?
Pneumonectomya( type of surgery to remove one of your lungs because of cancer, trauma, or some other condition)
